The Lingxingmen Stone Archway

The Lingxingmen Stone Archway is located at Yupingdun in Jiuxi Town, Xingwen County. It features four pillars and three gates, with a width of 6.36 meters and an overall height of 4.26 meters. The central horizontal beam of the main bay is adorned with low-relief carvings of “Double Phoenixes Facing the Sun” on the upper part and “Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl” on the lower part, while the central plaque is inscribed in raised regular script with the three characters “Lingxingmen” (Gate of the Spirit Star), along with an inscription dated to the 26th year of the Qianlong reign (1761). The side bays feature inscriptions in sunken regular script reading “Virtue Matches” (on the left) and “Heaven and Earth” (on the right), with a stone lion perched atop each of the outer pillars. The carvings and inscriptions on the back of the archway mirror those on the front. The Lingxingmen Stone Archway is a remnant structure from the period when the Chongbao Temple was converted into a Confucian temple during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. Its exquisite carving craftsmanship and unique style—distinct from typical memorial archways dedicated to chastity and filial piety—hold significant value for the study of local history. Inscription date: “Erected on the 15th day of the third month in the 26th year of the Qianlong reign of the August Qing”; front inscriptions: “Virtue Matches” and “Heaven and Earth”; back inscriptions: “XX” (now illegible) and “Ancient and Modern”.

Jiuxi Town is situated 64 kilometers west of the county seat. It borders Daba Miao Ethnic Township to the east, Yunnan Province to the south, Shipai and Caoying townships of Gong County to the west, and Xianfeng and Yuxi Miao Ethnic Townships to the north. Covering an area of approximately 140 square kilometers, the town sits at elevations ranging from 580 to 1,369 meters and is predominantly mountainous, representing a typical basin landscape of southwestern China.
