The Xingwen County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall (also known as the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou Border Area Guerrilla Column of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army Memorial Hall) is located on Baita Mountain in Xingwen County. The site features over 45% green landscaping and covers a built-up area of 300 square meters. It includes two exhibition rooms, more than 200 photos, and some revolutionary historical relics.

Xingwen County was the cradle and main theater of operations for the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou Border Area Guerrilla Column of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. On February 10, 1935, during the Long March, following the Zaxi Conference’s decision to establish a new base area in the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou border region, the CPC Central Committee dispatched several hundred personnel in Zaxi (now Weixin, Yunnan) to form the Sichuan Southern Special Committee and the Sichuan Southern Guerrilla Column of the Red Army. This force later merged with the Northern Guizhou Guerrilla Detachment and was renamed the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou Border Area Guerrilla Column of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. The column continuously fought against the “Three-Province Encirclement and Suppression Campaign” launched by the Kuomintang reactionaries across Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. It opened up guerrilla zones, upheld the anti-Japanese national united front, and despite being encircled and pursued by tens of thousands of enemy troops and local militias from the three provinces, the column fought valiantly in isolation until its eventual defeat in January 1937. Even after losing contact with the higher Party organization, the guerrilla column continued resisting enemy “mopping-up” campaigns, maintaining operations until 1947. It made significant contributions to covering the main forces’ northward advance, carrying out land revolution, and establishing base areas.

In 1994, a towering 30-meter-high “Monument to the Sichuan Southern Guerrilla Column of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army” was erected on Baita Mountain in Xingwen County. The inscription on the monument was penned by Zhang Aiping, then Minister of National Defense and founding General of the PLA, while the preface was written by Liu Fuchu, former Political Commissar and Commander of the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou Border Area Guerrilla Column of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. In 2009, the new Xingwen County Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall was completed, showcasing the moving revolutionary deeds of the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou Border Area Guerrilla Column, as well as the county’s revolutionary struggle history, profiles of key Party figures, and introductions to revolutionary martyrs.
