Monument to the Long March of the Red Army

The Monument to the Long March of the Red Army is a classic site of red tourism.

The Monument to the Long March of the Red Army is located in Group 2, Chaoyang Village, Daba Miao Ethnic Township, Xingwen County, at the small place called Jianshanzi, about 26 kilometers from the county seat of Xingwen.

On February 3, 1935, during the Long March, the First Red Army Corps broke through three enemy defense lines and advanced from Xuyong and Jin’e to Daba for an overnight stay. Lin Biao’s corps headquarters was stationed at the Guan Yu Temple in Daba (now the First Primary School of Daba). The next day, when leaving Daba, they were ambushed by local militias, and over 30 Red Army soldiers were killed within Daba. On February 7, part of Peng Dehuai’s Third Red Army Corps passed through Bamiaowan in Daba before proceeding to Zaxi (now Weixin County, Yunnan) to regroup.

To commemorate the passage of the Red Army during the Long March through Xingwen, the Daba District Committee and District Office of Xingwen County built this Red Army Monument in March 1990. The monument stands on a prominent small hill, covering an area of about 400 square meters, surrounded by farmland and residential houses. The monument is 18 meters high and 6 meters wide. The inscriptions on the front and back were written by Zhang Aiping, former Minister of National Defense, while those on the left and right sides were penned by Wang Bin, a veteran Red Army soldier, former Vice Minister and Advisor of the Ministry of Health. The base features inscriptions on three sides recounting the historical events of the Red Army’s march through Daba, written by Liu Fuchu, former Commander and Political Commissar of the Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou Border Guerrilla Detachment of the Red Army. The back features Mao Zedong’s poem “The Long March.”
