Zhang Family Ancestral Hall in Lizhuang

The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall in Lizhuang is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

The Zhang Family Ancestral Hall is located on Shanghe Street in the western part of Lizhuang Town, covering an area of over 2,000 square meters. It faces the mighty Yangtze River, with a vast natural lawn along the riverbank. To the northwest across the river lies Sanjiangqi, with Guilun Mountain also visible on the opposite bank, offering a very broad view.

The ancestral hall was built in the 19th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1839), when Zhang Desheng led about 60 clan members to raise 660 taels of silver to purchase the property from fellow clan members Zhang Jingzu and Zhang Changzu for use as the Zhang family’s ancestral temple. Its purpose was to provide a venue for the biannual ancestral worship ceremonies in spring and autumn, allowing descendants to honor their ancestors and trace their roots, as well as to address major matters within the clan.

The main structure of the ancestral hall is a quadrangle-style wooden building, with the upper part serving as the main ancestral shrine and the lower part as the hall rooms. The 50 window panels in the hall room are particularly distinctive. Each panel is exquisitely carved from premium nanmu wood with two cranes, totaling 100 cranes across all 50 panels. Each crane is uniquely shaped and lifelike, surrounded by flowing clouds, known as the “Hundred Cranes in Auspicious Clouds” windows. Architect Liang Sicheng once referred to the Hundred Crane Windows of the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall, the Wenchang Palace, the Kuixing Pavilion, and the Nine-Dragon Stele of the Yuwang Temple as the “Four Wonders of Lizhuang.”

Protective boundary: 10 meters beyond the site’s occupied area.
