The Martyrs' Execution Site at Five-People Pile (Garden Nunnery)

The Martyrs' Execution Site at Five-People Pile (Garden Nunnery) is a classic red tourism attraction.

Garden Nunnery is located at the entrance to People's Square on Renmin Road, Cuiping District, Yibin City.

On March 24, 1931, Gou Liangge, a special envoy of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, came to Yibin for an inspection. The CPC Yibin County Central Committee held an expanded meeting in a hotel on Mojiang Street (now Qinghua Street). Attendees included Kong Fangxin, Secretary of the CPC Yibin County Central Committee; Cai Tao, Secretary of the County Youth League Committee; Shen Yuqi, the County Committee secretary and communications officer; Huang Dashun, the County Committee’s agricultural movement commissioner; as well as Zhu Ruzheng and Min Nanxuan, members of the County Youth League Central Committee, totaling seven people. On March 26, the meeting was moved to a teahouse near the ErTianMen of Zhenwu Mountain. Zhu Ruzheng had to return to school and left early. Later, the meeting was relocated to another teahouse owned by Li Simiang on Zhongxiao Street, but it was discovered by Liu Wencui’s secret police team, who surrounded the teahouse. Except for Min Nanxuan, who escaped in the chaos, the other five were unfortunately arrested. On March 28, 1931, they were taken to a location near Garden Nunnery and executed. The next day, Shen Yuqi’s wife and local residents dug a large pit nearby and buried Shen’s coffin along with the remains of the other four martyrs side by side. This incident became known as the “Five-People Pile” event, which shocked both Yibin and the entire Sichuan province at the time.

Behind Garden Nunnery was a barren slope, which was demolished during the construction of People's Square in the 1950s. In April 1984, the site of the former Garden Nunnery was rebuilt as the Yibin Youth Palace.
