Ruoergai Grassland

Ruoergai Grassland is situated within the Ruoergai Wetland, stretching for dozens of kilometers across vast, fertile plains as far as the eye can see. In Tibetan, "Ruoergai" means "the place where immortals dwell." It boasts the second-largest grassland in China, second only to Hulunbuir, numerous beautiful lakes like Huahu Lake, mysterious caves hidden in the mountains, cool springs, and too many moving legends to count. The Ruoergai Grassland captivates travelers from near and far with its vast, deep, boundless, and majestic natural landscapes, as well as its cultural scenes of tents like boats, frolicking livestock, and singing herders. It offers visitors the chance to pause and appreciate the unique charm that nature reveals on the grasslands, and to fully enjoy the vast grassland vista of “looking as far as the eye can see, where sky and earth merge into one color.”

Location: 45 kilometers from Ruoergai County; National Highway 213 runs through it

Climate: The climate is mild with distinct seasons. The northern part features a quasi-south subtropical monsoon humid climate, while the mountainous southern region has climates ranging from mid-subtropical and north subtropical to south temperate and north temperate zones, characterized by a three-dimensional mountain climate. The annual average temperature is between 17.1°C and 18.5°C, with annual rainfall ranging from 748.4 to 1184.2 millimeters, 1200–1400 hours of sunshine, and a frost-free period of 300–358 days.

Honors: It is the second-largest grassland in China after Hulunbuir, as well as the largest, flattest, and most beautiful grassland in the country. It is also the world’s largest high-altitude peat marsh wetland, known as the “kidney of the Earth,” and ranks among China’s four major excellent pastures. In 2005, it was awarded the title “Hometown of Black-necked Cranes” by the China Wildlife Conservation Association.

Attraction Introduction: Apart from the “one-of-a-kind” blue skies, white clouds, waterweeds, fragrant flowers, and rare birds and plants, Ruoergai Grassland also offers two more wonders: lightning and rainbows. The weather on the grassland is unpredictable—one moment the sun is shining brightly, the next the sky changes dramatically, followed by thunder and rain. Due to the vastness of the grassland, visitors can personally experience the scene of “sunshine on one side, rain on the other.” After the rain, rainbows often appear, sometimes just a hundred meters away, shifting left and right, near and far, elusive and mysterious. Even more astonishing is the occasional sight of double rainbows hanging side by side like an arch bridge—truly a breathtaking view.
