Hongyuan Folk Village

Located in Longri Township, Hongyuan County, 55 kilometers from the county town. Two semi-circular hills face each other, with a moderate-sized basin in between where the folk village is situated. In the past, grassland herders lived a nomadic life following water and grass, with no permanent fixed dwellings—their tents were their homes. Now, this mode of production and lifestyle is beginning to change as residential settlements are being built, and the folk village is one of them.

Upon entering the folk village, you are immediately enveloped by a rich atmosphere of local customs and traditions. Although the buildings here are constructed with bricks, tiles, and cement, their architectural style is unique—most feature a concave shape—and they all include a sangkang (an incense burner used for offering to deities). Each home has a scripture hall where thangkas, Buddha statues, scriptures, and various ritual instruments such as conch shells, ritual drums, vajras, and mandalas are enshrined. Numerous flagpoles stand in front of and behind the houses, adorned with colorful prayer flags. Each household has a lawn in front, where tents are pitched, and Tibetan mastiffs and horses ready for riding are tethered.

Hospitality here is also unique, with the offering of hada (silk scarves)

replacing handshakes. The word “Tashi Delek” serves both as a greeting and a farewell. The diet is entirely different, featuring dishes like hand-grabbed mutton, ginseng fruit rice, butter tea, and monk’s dumplings—many of which may be unfamiliar to most people. The mental outlook and aesthetic values are also distinctly unique. Therefore, in a relatively short time, visitors can gain insight into the general customs and habits of the herders. In addition to the Longri Township Folk Village, the Anqu Folk Village and Wache Folk Village along the highway are also quite distinctive, with especially convenient transportation, making them rising stars.
