Dongpo Lake Park

Meishan Dongpo Lake Park is located in the eastern suburbs of Meishan City. It borders the Minjiang River embankment to the east, the Minjiang River Bridge to the south, the Dabai residential community to the west, and the natural water area of Wangjiadu to the north. The park covers a land area of 300 mu and a water area of about 100 mu. It was designed by Sichuan Union University’s School of Architecture and Planning, with construction starting in June 1997 and completion and official opening on December 31, 1998 — taking a total of one and a half years. The completion of Dongpo Lake Park ended the history of Meishan, which had existed as an administrative region for 1,500 years, without a public park.

The design of Dongpo Lake Park emphasizes the cultural essence of Dongpo within a natural setting, striving to reflect cultural richness, entertainment, fun, and leisure. It integrates various distinctive landscapes and functions with the ecological environment, combining gardens, architecture, sculpture, and natural scenery into a cohesive whole. It is a modern urban leisure park embodying the spirit of the times.

The park features a variety of recreational and leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, children’s playground, rockery, boat dock, and tea garden. Attractions include a group sculpture of merit steles, an art plaza, a sandy waterside play area, winding bridges, covered bridges, and waterside pavilions. The park also planted numerous valuable plants such as wintersweet, azalea, camellia, osmanthus, palm trees, and camphor trees.

Su Shi (1037–1101), courtesy name Zizhan, literary name Dongpo Jushi, was a native of Meishan in Meizhou (now part of Sichuan). His family had a strong literary tradition: his grandfather Su Xu loved reading and was good at poetry, while his father Su Xun was a master of classical prose who personally tutored Su Shi and his younger brother Su Zhe. Their mother, Lady Cheng, was educated and principled, once telling the young Su Shi the story of Fan Pang from the Book of the Later Han · Biography of Fan Pang, using the deeds of ancient virtuous figures to inspire him to uphold his integrity. By the time Su Shi left Sichuan for the capital at age 21, his knowledge and cultivation were already quite mature.
