River of Fine Liquor

The River of Fine Liquor Scenic Area is located on the cliffs of Wugong, on the southern bank of the Chishui River at the border between Gulin in Luzhou and Renhuai in Guizhou Province. It features three magnificent giant Chinese characters “美酒河” (River of Fine Liquor), inscribed by the renowned calligrapher Shao Zehua. The scenic area is majestic, mystical, beautiful, and rugged.

The cliffside carving of the three characters “美酒河” is the largest of its kind in the world. These grand characters are embedded into a steep cliff face about 300 meters high, which looks as if carved by nine knives, covering an area of approximately 4,800 square meters. Along the River of Fine Liquor, two particularly dazzling flowers bloom among the world of fine wines — Moutai, China’s national liquor, and Langjiu, a renowned Chinese liquor brand. The river produces liquor as abundantly as it springs water, earning nationwide fame and international acclaim. With an annual production of tens of thousands of tons, it is truly a river of liquor — a unique phenomenon unmatched anywhere else in the country and recognized as a national marvel. The River of Fine Liquor boasts not only stunning natural scenery but also distinctive cultural landscapes. Along the northern bank of the river, four stone-carved dragons stretch along the roadside. Each dragon is 192 meters long, totaling 768 meters. They serve both as highway guardrails and exquisite stone sculptures, demonstrating remarkable craftsmanship and vivid imagery — a true masterpiece.

Getting There and Away

By Car: Depart from Luzhou, take the Naxi–Qianxi Expressway, exit at Zhendong, drive 2.2 km along National Highway 321, then enter Provincial Highway 309 and continue to Erlang Town. Drive toward Renhuai for about 15 minutes.

By Bus: Travelers can take a bus from Luzhou Square Bus Station or Luzhou Passenger Transport Center to Gulin (approximately 3.5 hours). In Gulin Passenger Transport Center, transfer to a bus bound for Erlang (about 1 hour), then switch to a bus from Erlang to Renhuai (about 20 minutes).
