Buddhist Rock Paintings on HuaYanJiao Mountain

The Buddhist rock paintings on HuaYanJiao Mountain are located about 5,000 meters northeast of Gecha Jiao Village, Xialiang Town, Xiangyuan County, painted at the entrance of a cave on the mountain summit. These are relics from the Northern Wei Dynasty, measuring 2.2 meters in width (north to south) and 1.93 meters in height, covering an area of approximately 4.246 square meters. There are six paintings in total from north to south, with the second one being the main deity image, which is 0.75 meters high and 0.84 meters wide, depicting the Western Trinity preaching scene in red, yellow, and brown colors; the central figure is Amitabha Buddha, flanked by Guanyin Bodhisattva and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, while the lower part shows images of arhat bodhisattvas and other figures; the main deity is 0.66 meters tall, with a pedestal that is 0.21 meters high and 0.2 meters wide; the paintings on both sides of the main deity image depict donor figures wearing wide-sleeved robes and clasping their hands in prayer, facing the main deity as if listening to the sermon. Most of the paintings have become blurred due to erosion by rainwater, and part of the cave ceiling has collapsed. These rock paintings provide extremely valuable physical material for studying the history of local Buddhist development and painting art.
