Introduction to Luzhou Zhongshan

Located in the western suburbs of Luzhou City, it was historically known as Baozi Mountain, Baoshan, or Hufeng Mountain, and only acquired its current name after the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is one of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Luzhou.” This comprehensive scenic area combines natural landscapes, cultural heritage sites, and historical anecdotes. The main attraction, Zhongshan, boasts numerous historical landmarks. At its summit once stood the Temple of Marquis Wu, built during the Song Dynasty’s Qingyuan years (1195–1200), where villagers would “offer horses in procession and worship before the temple” during annual temple fairs—a grand spectacle in its time. Although the temple has long been gone, spring outings to Zhongshan have become a new tradition. Covering several square miles, the area is exquisitely beautiful, with lush camphor, cypress, pine, and nanmu trees; peach, plum, peony, and chrysanthemum blossoms vie in beauty throughout the seasons, painting the hills in vibrant hues as if on a canvas. From the mountaintop, visitors can gaze far into the distance at the confluence of the Tuo River and the Yangtze, where misty waters stretch endlessly, urban skyscrapers stand in close rows, and boats weave like a dense tapestry on the river. The Qing Dynasty’s Zhao Fan wrote of Zhongshan: “Exiting the city and looking back, it stands like a well; high pavilions tower into the clouds, supremely serene and vast. Misty waves blur inner and outer rivers; rosy clouds glimmer over eastern and western ridges.”

Zhongshan Park is located in downtown Jiangyang District and was originally called Baoshan. When Zhuge Liang quelled the southern regions, he stationed troops here. Zhuge Liang, the Chancellor, devoted his life to service with unwavering dedication until his last breath. By the Ming Dynasty, to honor his legacy, the people of Luzhou renamed Baoshan as Zhongshan, from which Zhongshan Park gets its name.
