Introduction to Luzhou Bell and Drum Tower The Luzhou Bell and Drum Tower is located in the northern part of Luzhou city. It stands 20 meters tall, has four stories built from bricks, five spires on the roof, and a square base with each side measuring 6.45 meters. It was constructed under the direction of Xue Jia, the military defense officer of Luzhou, in the 16th year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1537), primarily serving the purposes of timekeeping and sounding alarms. In 1927, Shui Xiheng purchased four large self-winding clocks from Siemens in Germany and installed them on all four sides of the top floor. The clock hands move simultaneously and strike the hour automatically, with the chimes audible as far as the outskirts of the city. A small garden has now been built around the Bell and Drum Tower, covering an area of 2,100 square meters with an investment of over 9 million yuan, featuring green spaces, landscape ornaments, and a small fountain.
