The Former Residence of the Li Family in Xishi

The Former Residence of the Li Family in Xishi is located to the west of Xishi Village, Xiadian Town, Xiangyuan County. This residence was once the home of Li Maogong, who served as the Jiangxi Provincial Administration Commissioner during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, the Li family was a prominent clan in Xishi Village, owning four residences complete with ornamental gates, a ceremonial gate, as well as businesses such as a pawnshop, a brewery, an oil mill, and a vinegar workshop. Currently, one residence and the pawnshop remain relatively intact. The residence faces west and east, measuring 24.8 meters from east to west and 21.8 meters from north to south, covering an area of approximately 536 square meters. The surviving structures date back to the Qing Dynasty and feature a single-courtyard layout. The central axis includes the main house and the eastern wing, flanked by the northern and southern wings. The main house consists of four cave dwellings made of earthen bricks, featuring arched windows and doors, with brick carvings extending over the front eaves and adorned with tubular tiles. The northern wing is a two-story shed-style building, three bays wide and four rafters deep, with a single-eave flush gable roof and a five-rafter frame. The ground floor has arched windows and doors, while the upper floor features square ones. Its brick carvings and wood carvings hold considerable artistic value. This residence is a typical example of traditional northern Chinese vernacular architecture.

Xishi Village: General Information

Xishi Village is located 5 kilometers west of Xiadian Town, bordering Hekou Village. The village has a total of 47 households and 172 residents, with 812 mu of arable land. The main crop grown is corn. The per capita annual net income reaches 3,000 yuan. The village has established a public sentiment reception room, a convenience service office, and a rural party member distance education network. It also built an agricultural integrity activity room, offices, a Party conduct and clean governance warning education room, and a rural clinic.
