Duanbao Stone Niche

The Duanbao Stone Niche is located 20 meters south of Duanbao Village, Xialiang Town, Xiangyuan County. It measures 1.5 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and covers an area of approximately 3 square meters. Made of bluestone, the niche is built to resemble a house on a stone base, standing about 1.3 meters tall with a gabled roof. Inside the niche is enshrined the General of the Five Paths.

The Five Path Generals of the underworld are five ghostly deities who guard the eastern, southern, western, northern, and central entrances of the netherworld. Legend has it that they are divine beings under the command of the Great Emperor of the Eastern Peak, overseeing life, death, honor, and fortune in the human world. Therefore, Five Path Temples are often erected at major crossroads on the outskirts of villages.

Another belief holds that the Five Path Generals are gods of theft. It is said that the term "Five Paths" originates from the “Zhi Qie Pian” (Chapter on Thieving) in Zhuangzi: “Even thieves have their code: to presume the contents of a room is wisdom; to enter first is bravery; to exit last is righteousness; to know what can or cannot be taken is intelligence; and to divide the loot equally is benevolence.” Because the Five Path Generals were described as deities of theft, some also mistakenly refer to them as the “Five Theft Generals,” who were five infamous bandits with names: Du Ping, Li Si, Ren An, Sun Li, and Geng Yanzheng. After their deaths, their spirits lingered and supposedly haunted the local area. Some villagers, fearing theft, worshipped them in hopes of appealing to their mercy.
