Lezhi Baoguo Temple

Lezhi Baoguo Temple is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a cultural tourism site.

Baoguo Temple is situated on Golden Turtle Mountain, about twenty kilometers northeast of Lezhi County, covering an area of over 30,000 square meters. According to the Lezhi County Annals, it was initially constructed in the second year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (582 AD), and has a history of more than 1,400 years. Having weathered the storms of history and experienced multiple cycles of rise and fall; today, in this era of national prosperity and flourishing Buddhism, through the arduous efforts of two generations of abbots and the devoted support of numerous followers, one of the few remaining ancient temples from the millennia-old past in Sichuan has been revived.

The temple is embraced by verdant mountains on all sides, backed by hills and facing water, offering a tranquil environment. It is surrounded by lush woods, rugged rocks, thousand-year-old trees, remnants of stone tablets from the Tang Dynasty, stone coffins from the Song and Ming Dynasties. Integrating halls, ponds, bridges, pavilions, caves, and cliff carvings into one harmonious landscape, the temple rewards visitors who ascend its steps with a breathtaking view of its layered and winding structures.

Key Halls

Baoguo Temple features an elegant layout and includes five main halls: the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Guanyin Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, and the Patriarchs Hall. It houses nearly sixty statues of Buddhas and bodhisattvas such as Maitreya Buddha, the Four Heavenly Kings, Skanda, Shakyamuni Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, Guanyin Bodhisattva, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, and the Eighteen Arhats, as well as statues of patriarchs such as Simo, Benkong, and Liyu—all vivid and solemn. Among them are 23 jade Buddhist statues brought from Myanmar, including a four-meter-tall and over ten-ton heavy statue of the Amitabha Buddha (the Guiding Buddha), making them rare cultural relics. Currently, among temples in China, the number and size of these Burmese jade Buddha statues are considered quite uncommon.

Longmen Town: A township under the jurisdiction of Lezhi County. It was known as Longmenchang in 1926, became a township in 1935, was converted into a commune in 1958, and reinstated as a township in 1984. Located in the northern part of the county, it is 11 kilometers from the county seat. Covering an area of 45.1 square kilometers with a population of 24,000, it has road access. The township administers 22 village committees: Heilongdong, Tangyanjing, Tianbasì, Baimiao, Sandaoguai, Jinggu, Baiheqiao, Yulongqiao, Baoguo, Yanhuodian, Zongshu, Wangjiagou, Shengdeng, Nongke, Duanshigang, Qingshan'gou, Longwang, Huanglin, Yangzai Temple, Oujia Ci, Shichaomen, and Jinma Temple.
