DeXiao City

China's DeXiao City is located in the renowned historical and cultural ancient town of Xiaoquan. Known as the hometown of great filial piety, it is the birthplace of "One Family, Three Paragons of Filial Piety," the foremost of China’s Twenty-Four Exemplars of Filial Piety. Situated in the northwest of the Chengdu Plain, it lies 72 kilometers from Chengdu. As early as nearly two thousand years ago during the Han Dynasty, the stories of the filial son Jiang Shi, his virtuous daughter-in-law Pang Sanchun, and their filial grandson Jiang An’an became widely known and were celebrated as model tales of virtue—especially the story of “An’an Delivering Rice,” which gained nationwide fame and renown across Southeast Asia.

Han Cheng, a native of Xiaoquan, was a subordinate of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty. During the Battle of Dongting Lake, Han Cheng died heroically while fighting to break through enemy lines in an attempt to save his lord. Later, he was posthumously honored by Zhu Yuanzhang as the City God of Xiaoquan, and a temple was built in his honor.

In Xiaoquan, acts of filial piety have emerged one after another throughout history, earning high praise from scholars, poets, emperors, and generals alike. The Ming Emperor Chengzu, the Song Dynasty poet Han Fen, the Qing Dynasty Hanlin academician Li Diaoyuan, calligrapher Xie Wuliang, and others all composed poems and essays in tribute, helping to deeply root the fine traditional Chinese value of filial piety in people’s hearts.

Today’s China DeXiao City preserves a wealth of ancient relics dating back over a thousand years, including the Jiang Filial Temple, the Scripture Depository Tower, Jiang Gong’s Tomb, as well as Sichuan Province’s only brick-built Buddhist pagoda from the Yuan Dynasty—the Longhu Relic Pagoda—and the Qing Dynasty-era mosque inscribed with an imperial calligraphy plaque by Emperor Daoguang. There are also many other historic ancestral halls, temples, and ancient streets. It has now become a social practice base for teenagers in Sichuan Province and a social practice education base for Sichuan University.

Xiaoquan Town: The ancient town of Xiaoquan is located along the Demao Highway within the Jiuzhaigou tourism loop, situated in the western part of the Western Sichuan Plain. It is 75 kilometers from Chengdu and 19 kilometers from Deyang. The town covers a total area of 52.5 square kilometers, with a population of 42,000. It administers 20 administrative villages and 5 neighborhood committees. The built-up area of the town spans 3 square kilometers, with a permanent resident population of over 18,000. It is among the first batch of 100 pilot towns and one of 51 key towns in Sichuan Province. It is also an important settlement area for the Hui ethnic group in Deyang City and the location of the Islamic Association, where the Hui and Han peoples live together harmoniously.
