Xiangyuan Chongfu Temple

Xiangyuan Chongfu Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Changzhi City.

Commonly known as Shangsi Tower, Chongfu Temple is located in Chaoyang Community, Guhanshi Town, Xiangyuan County. It faces south with a northward orientation, stretching 36.5 meters from east to west and 32 meters from north to south, covering an area of approximately 1,168 square meters. The year of its establishment is unknown, but it was renovated in the 25th year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1546) and the 8th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1882). Currently, only the upper temple tower, the western side hall, and the eastern wing room remain. The upper temple tower has a stone base that is 0.45 meters high, a five-bay width, and a depth of four rafters. The ground floor is surrounded by corridors on all sides and features a double-eave hip-and-gable roof. The first floor has no bracket sets on the column tops, and the beam ends extend beyond the eaves forming grasshopper heads; the second floor has three-curved single-kick bracket sets on the column tops; the third floor has five-curved single-kick bracket sets on the column tops. The doors and windows on the first and second floors have been modified, while the third floor features four-panel lattice doors with four clear divisions on both the front and rear eaves of the central and side bays. The spandrel panels on the first and second floors retain about 25 square meters of Qing Dynasty murals. A wall in the eastern wing room is embedded with a stele inscription from the 2nd year of the Shunzhi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1645), recording the renovation of the eastern hall of Chongfu Temple. In 1999, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Changzhi City.
