Dongyue Temple is located to the north of Xili Village, Guhan Town, Xiangyuan County. It faces south and measures 25 meters in length from east to west and 47 meters in width from north to south, covering an area of approximately 1,175 square meters. The year of its establishment is unknown. According to an extant stele in the temple, it was renovated in the second year of the Jingtai era of the Ming Dynasty (1451). The existing structures date back to the Qing Dynasty. The temple follows a single-courtyard layout, with its central axis running from south to north, featuring an existing mountain gate and main hall, flanked by east and west side towers, as well as east and west wing rooms. The east wing room is nine bays wide and four rafters deep, with a five-rafter front-porch structure. The bracket sets on the column tops feature cantilevered beam ends, and the roof is a single-eave flush-gable style. Eight stone tablets are preserved in the courtyard, including one commemorating the renovation of Dongyue Temple in the second year of the Jingtai era of the Ming Dynasty (1451), and another from the first year of the Jiaying era of the Qing Dynasty (1796). In 2007, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Changzhi City.

The Dongyue Emperor, also known as the God of Mount Tai, Huang Feihu. As the personification of Mount Tai, the God of Mount Tai serves as a sacred emissary between heaven and earth, acting as the protector deity who bestows the Mandate of Heaven upon emperors throughout history to govern the realm. According to China’s ancient theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, Mount Tai is situated in the east—the direction where the sun rises and where all things originate. Therefore, the God of Mount Tai holds vital powers over life and death, which extend into several specific functions: overseeing transitions between old and new, safeguarding the nation and ensuring the people’s welfare; granting longevity and immortality; bestowing fortune, rank, and status; and governing the timing of life and death, as well as the realm of spirits.

Since the Qin and Han dynasties, the influence of the God of Mount Tai gradually permeated all levels of society and became integrated into daily life. As the deity symbolizing the harmony of Yin and Yang and the origin of all things, the God of Mount Tai evolved beyond protecting the nation and ensuring peace and longevity to also become the lord of the underworld who could summon souls and govern spirits. With the expanding influence of the God of Mount Tai, his worship spread widely, and Dongyue Temples of varying sizes were built across the country, reflecting the God of Mount Tai—also known as the Dongyue Emperor’s—prominent status in traditional Chinese religion and his societal impact. Emperors throughout the dynasties held the God of Mount Tai in high esteem: he was titled “Heavenly Equal King” in the Tang Dynasty, elevated to “Benevolent and Sacred Heavenly Equal King” and “Heavenly Equal Benevolent and Sacred Emperor” in the Song Dynasty, further honored in the Yuan Dynasty as “Great Heavenly Equal Benevolent and Sacred Emperor,” and restored to “Dongyue God of Mount Tai” in the Ming Dynasty. The 28th day of the third lunar month is the birthday of the Dongyue God of Mount Tai, when worshippers from across the country come to offer incense and pay tribute in celebration.
