General Murong’s Temple

General Murong’s Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Changzhi City.

Wangjiazhuang General Murong’s Temple is located in Wangjiazhuang Village, Guhancheng Town, Xiangyuan County. It faces south and measures 45 meters from north to south and 24 meters from east to west, covering an area of 1,080 square meters.

According to the existing stele, it was first built in the first year of the Xianfeng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1851). The existing structures are all relics from the Qing Dynasty. The temple has a single-courtyard layout, with the central axis currently featuring a stage, offering hall, main hall, and side structures including east and west dressing towers, east and west wing rooms, east and west side halls, as well as one stele preserved inside the temple.

The main hall is situated on a 0.6-meter-high stone platform, with a width of three bays, a depth of four rafters, a single-eave flush gable roof, and a five-rafter front-porch style framework. The bracket sets atop the columns feature single upward and downward cantilevers, making it a well-preserved architectural complex from the Qing Dynasty. A stele commemorating the renovation in the first year of the Xianfeng reign of the Qing Dynasty is also preserved. In 2007, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the People’s Government of Changzhi City.

Legend has it that in the seventeenth year of the Taihe era during the Northern Wei Dynasty, Emperor Xiaowen of Wei moved the capital from Datong to Luoyang. When passing through Jiulong Village in Xiangyuan, suddenly the sky and earth darkened and he could not proceed. Emperor Xiaowen was greatly alarmed. Murong Chitu, who held the official title of Left Commander of the Imperial Guards, cut open his own heart to offer a sacrifice to heaven, after which the sky cleared and the journey resumed. In recognition of Murong Chitu’s merit, the emperor ordered a temple to be built in his honor.
