In the autumn of 1945, after Japan’s surrender, Yan Xishan invaded Changzhi and surrounding counties in an attempt to seize the fruits of the war victory, which triggered the famous Shangdang Campaign. From late August to early October 1945, Comrades Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping set up command here and led the troops of the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military District to annihilate over 30,000 of Yan Xishan’s forces in the Shangdang Campaign, recapturing Changzhi and nearby counties.

The former site of the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military District’s Shangdang Campaign planning meeting is now a two-courtyard complex, consisting of the east and west lower wing rooms of the front courtyard, the east and west upper wing rooms of the front courtyard, the passageway hall, as well as the east and west wing rooms and the main building of the rear courtyard.
