The ruins of the Ancient City of Chunyou are located on Yanshan Mountain in Qingju Town, 15 kilometers south of Gaoping District. With a major river acting as a natural barrier in front and towering peaks and cliffs behind, the site boasts naturally formidable terrain and was one of the “Eight Pillars Against the Mongols” during the late Southern Song Dynasty. In the third year of the Chunyou era (1243) of the Song Dynasty, Yu Jie, the Pacification Commissioner of Sichuan, built a fortress atop Qingju Mountain. In the ninth year of Chunyou (1249), the administrative seat of Shunqing Prefecture was moved to the Stone Fortress on Qingju Mountain to resist the southern invasion of the Mongol army. The Ancient City of Chunyou played a significant role in the war against the Yuan Dynasty, forming a strategic stronghold together with Hechuan’s Fishing Town. On December 15, 1994, it was designated as a cultural relics protection unit by the Nanchong Municipal People’s Government.
