Datong Zitong Temple
Datong Zitong Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.
Zitong Temple is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Jialing District, Nanchong City, in Group 2 of Zitong Temple Village, Datong Town, Jialing District. It was first built in the 49th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1784 AD), facing east with its back to the west. The temple complex consists of the Wenchang Hall, Guanyin Hall, and Buddha Hall from east to west, covering a land area of 1,205 square meters and a construction area of approximately 700 square meters.
Originally, Zitong Temple was a shrine dedicated to the Wenchang Emperor. Later, the Zitong deity Zhang Yazi became the Wenchang Emperor, presiding over literary affairs and imperial examinations. Hence, the Zitong deity is the Wenchang Emperor, and the temple dedicated to him came to be known as Zitong Temple. With a history of over 200 years, Zitong Temple has had a profound influence on the surrounding area. Behind the temple flows a river that also takes its name from the temple—Zitong Temple River—which meanders around the east and north sides of the temple. The village where the temple is located is also named “Zitong Temple Village.”
The Guanyin Hall is a unique wooden structure with a double-eaved, three-tiered hip-and-gable roof, designed in the pavilion style. Its main structural components have been preserved in their original form, giving it high historical, artistic, and research value. Not only has the beam framework of the Guanyin Hall remained unchanged for 200 years, but some of its individual components also retain their original historical features, showcasing distinct characteristics. From the entrance of the Guanyin Hall, one can overlook the entire scenery of Zitong Temple Village, as well as catch a glimpse of the small green tiles on the temple roof and the exquisitely painted cloud motifs.
Today, Zitong Temple enjoys thriving incense offerings. Since the temple enshrines the Wenchang Emperor, many parents come here to pray for their children’s success in gaining admission to university. During temple fairs, the site becomes especially crowded. The first day of the Lunar New Year is when the temple sees the most visitors, receiving tens of thousands of worshippers.
