After General Gan Ning died in battle, he was buried in his hometown. However, as a man from Shu who served the state of Wu, and because he died in the Battle of Yiling — which led to the tragic death of Liu Bei, the Emperor Zhaolie of Shu Han — his family feared being implicated and went into hiding, changing their names and fleeing to distant lands. Although the locals admired Gan Ning’s loyalty and bravery, they dared not celebrate him openly. Instead, they secretly built a small earthen mound tomb here, and did not dare to erect a stele or record his deeds. It was not until 1932, when the local teacher Du Jieshan rebuilt and renovated the tomb, that two steles were erected for the first time — one in front of the tomb and another at the site of the current Qinglong River New Bridge. The inscriptions read “Tomb of Great General Gan Ning” and “Hometown of Gan Ning, Breakthrough General of Wu and Governor of Xiling.”
