Tongjing Gorge

Situated on the banks of the Yulin River in the eastern part of Yubei District, Chongqing, about 65 kilometers from Yuzhong District, it was originally named Tongjing Gorge. The scenic area spans around 10 square kilometers. With "Tongjing Gorge Monkeys" topping the "Twelve Scenic Spots of Bayu," the area offers a panoramic view of mountains, water, forests, springs, gorges, caves, waterfalls, tarns, small islands, ancient stockades, and flocks of eagles, and is hailed as a "Natural Museum." It has been celebrated by literati throughout history as a "Fairyland of Wuling." In 1989, it was designated as a provincial-level scenic spot.

Tongjing’s hot springs are renowned far and wide, with some even acclaiming them as "the best hot springs under heaven." The Tongjing Hot Spring City, with a total investment of over 8 million yuan, was put into use on May 8, 1997. Covering an area of 17,500 square meters—including a 9,500-square-meter garden-style park and 8,000 square meters of building area—the complex consists of three main sections: an outdoor swimming pool, indoor couples’ pools, and an entertainment area. The water temperature ranges between 30–53 degrees Celsius. The outdoor pool is divided into children’s and adult sections, accommodating up to 500 people, and is equipped with modern facilities such as changing rooms, showers, dance halls, lounges, cold drink bars, and physiotherapy and health care rooms. In summer, under the sunshine, visitors can enjoy both hot spring baths and sunbathing. In winter, the warm springs offer a taste of springtime warmth. The overall scale of the hot spring city ranks first in the southwestern region.

Stretching ten li along the Fan Tang River, with nine twists and eighteen turns, Tongjing Gorge is composed of Wentang Gorge, Tongjin Gorge, and Eagle Gorge, and is often referred to as the "Little Three Gorges." Entering the gorge, towering cliffs stand against the sky, while lush bamboo covers the mountainsides—truly a feast for the eyes. The gorge is winding and enclosed, with walls closing in like a barrel and only a sliver of sky and water visible. Groups of monkeys can be seen climbing cliffs, hanging from treetops, or playing with visitors… Here, you can experience the joy of humans coexisting with nature. In summer, waterfalls hang high with mist swirling around the cliffs, creating ever-changing scenes, while hundreds of eagles circle the skies—a spectacular sight.

The scenic area features over 70 karst caves, with magnificent and uniquely shaped stalactites inside. Monkey Cave stretches 2,000 meters, with towering stone pillars creating a wild atmosphere. Yangjia Cave spirals down to a depth of 105 meters, with dense stalactites glittering like stars and faint fluorescence. Xiaying Cave extends 437 meters, with murmuring underground rivers that captivate visitors.

The Tongjing Scenic Area boasts warm springs, perilous gorges, marvelous caves, bizarre rocks, gentle mountains, serene valleys, and graceful bamboo—all shining uniquely amidst the Bashan-Shu waters. Radiating irresistible charm, it attracts curious travelers and explorers from around the world.
