Wanning Dazhou Island

Also known as the Bird's Nest Island, it is located in the southeastern sea area of Wanning City and is the largest island along the coast of Hainan. It lies 15 kilometers from Wanning County and faces Wuchang Port across the sea, where boats can be taken to the island. Dazhou Island is also called Duchuling or Duzhuling. The island consists of two islets and three peaks, covering an area of 4.36 square kilometers, with the main peak reaching 289.3 meters in height. Since the Tang and Song dynasties, it has served as a maritime landmark and is the only habitat of golden swiftlets in China. The “Oriental delicacy” Dazhou bird’s nest is produced here. The island is rich in plant resources such as yam (Chinese yam), Indian buead, dragon’s blood tree, and wild pepper. Animals include woolly-necked storks, snakes, skinks, and a variety of birds, making it an abundant natural resource. Bird’s Nest Island is also a great destination for sightseeing and marine landscapes. The island is divided into North Xiaoling and South Dalin, connected by a 500-meter-long sandy beach in between. The island features peculiar rocks and beautiful seas, offering not only mountain and rock views but also sea vistas and opportunities for diving. The waters around the island are crystal clear, generally allowing underwater visibility of 5 to 10 meters. The seabed is vibrant with diverse marine life, making it highly suitable for underwater exploration and photography. Diving into the sea reveals a colorful and breathtaking underwater world. The island’s bird’s nest caves are mysterious, surrounded by lush ancient trees and oddly shaped rocks. Especially stunning is the mirage-like scene of “peaks mirrored in water with islets facing each other,” as well as the view of “emerald water pouring like jade, silver ribbons thrown into the air” created by gentle winds and the splash of waves against rocks. Exploring the underwater world offers a visual feast of colors. Here, visitors can climb to high points to watch sunrises and sunsets while fully enjoying the unique pleasures of tropical maritime tourism. In 1990, it was designated as a national marine ecological and climatic nature reserve.

Best Travel Season:

The best time to visit Dazhou Island is from November to May each year when the climate is warm and dry, and flocks of golden swiftlets come to the island to build nests and escape the winter. From June to October, it is the typhoon and thunderstorm season in Hainan, with often rough seas.

Tips:

Be sure to bring your own drinking water. If that's inconvenient, you can also buy drinks, instant noodles, and other food at the island’s only small shop. If you plan to stay overnight on the island, it’s best to bring your own tent, as the simple shelters built by fishermen may not accommodate many people. Following local fishermen will definitely lead you to food options, with island eateries serving seafood such as rare fish and crabs.
