Liulian Ridge

Liulian Ridge is a provincial-level nature reserve.

Located 60 kilometers north of Wancheng Town in Wanning, Liulian Ridge is named for its six connected peaks that undulate like rolling waves. In ancient times, it was famed as the "lofty peaks rising amid verdant beauty" and is one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Wanzhou.

The scenery of Liulian Ridge is extraordinary. Looking up from its base, visitors see a sea of surrounding peaks, with lush, towering ridgelines. From afar, the six peaks veiled in mist look like six graceful maidens, delicate and enchanting. Here, the mountains are grand, valleys crisscrossed, forests lush, and grasslands abundant, offering rich tropical rainforest views—making it a rare natural botanical kingdom in Hainan Province.

Hiking up from the eastern foothills of Liulian Ridge and following the trail toward the main peak, Taishiyi, you’ll climb step by step. Along the way, the terrain rises and falls, dense forests stretch out as far as the eye can see, and ancient trees tower overhead. Woody vines climb from tree to tree, weaving through the woods. Under the big trees, shrubs grow thickly, with vibrant flowers and plants in all shapes and forms. Visitors can’t help but feel a sense of “all streams converging as one, united we stand strong.” Wildflowers bloom competitively, filling the forest air with sweet fragrances. Halfway up the mountain, the scenery changes again: birds chirp melodiously among the trees, while the occasional call of a partridge echoes, “The mountains are so clear, how wonderful!” A small mountain spring winds its way down the mountainside, babbling softly. Here, birds sing, water trickles, and leaves rustle, creating a harmonious symphony of the forest. Ancient poets who visited left behind the verse: “Travelers find endless joy here, and even the tall trees echo with the songs of valley orioles.” Ascending along a secluded path to the summit of Taishiyi Peak, you’ll find the terrain steep and the views spectacular. Standing atop, you can gaze into the distance at the undulating peaks surrounded by endless greenery. Below the forest canopy, winding mountain paths twist like dragons and snakes, while the scenic beauty of the hills embraces the northern foot of Liulian. To the east, the land stretches toward the sea—a breathtaking scene of verdant mountains and clear waters. A Qing Dynasty poet, after visiting Liulian Ridge, wrote: “Gazing into the distance, the green mountains rise into the azure sky, the connected peaks stand abruptly to welcome you; the lofty heights blend indistinguishably with the heavens, the rich hues of the land defy depiction. The vast calls of birds often summon their mates, deep in the forest, beasts roam unnamed. The beautiful scenery, high and low, is a feast for the eyes; sharing wine with friends, our hearts pour out completely.”

After visiting Taishiyi Peak, walk around to the southeast, then descend gradually along a rugged mountain path to the southwest. Crossing two deep valleys, you’ll reach the southern foot of Liulian Ridge. Climb another small peak, and you’ll arrive at the former site of the Qiongya Soviet regime. This area features steep terrain, overlapping peaks, densely tangled roots, thick forests, and thorny thickets—forming a natural barrier. Back then, the Red Army relied on this treacherous landscape to endure harsh conditions, spreading and growing the revolutionary spark until it ignited across all of Hainan. Here lies a cave known as the “Red Army Cave.” Its ancient name is Cold Cave. From the outside, massive rocks lean together like a natural stone chamber, with wild vines hanging over the entrance. Inside, five interconnected caves stretch back, and beneath them flows cool, clear spring water. The air inside is fresh and refreshing. Ancient poets left the verse: “Even guests sitting in this cave would raise their glasses to the breeze, their hearts equally moved.” This cave served as a refuge for wounded Red Army soldiers. Exiting through another opening and heading northwest onto a flat area, you’ll find the former Red Army training ground, complete with weapons used for drills—swords, guns, wooden sticks, bricks—as well as political study tools like stone slabs and tables. In those days, institutions such as an advanced Lenin School, military academy, and Red Army machinery factory were established here. Today, the Red Army Cave is not only a magical attraction in the Liulian Ridge scenic area but also a meaningful site for remembering revolutionary history, honoring martyrs, and educating people about revolutionary traditions and patriotism.

Liulian Ridge is an extension of the Wuzhi Mountain range, extending north to the border between Qionghai and Ding’an, south to the junction of Lingshui and Baoting counties, west to Ma’an Mountain, and east to the sea. The mountain range runs from north to south, covering an area of 394 square kilometers. Its six peaks are: Dajianting, Taishiyi, Shigouzui, Sanzhi Xiang, Biguxia, and Diyi Jia. The height difference among the six peaks is minimal, with the highest, Taishiyi Peak, reaching an elevation of 558 meters. Liulian Ridge is home to dense stands of rare plants such as green tallow, fragrant tall trees, mother trees, red silk cotton, black silk cotton, and chinaberry. With over 18,000 acres of forested land, it is designated as a natural plant reserve in Hainan Province.

Liulian Ridge is not only famous for its towering peaks and beautiful forests but also for the countless ravines and caves within the range. In ancient times, these were gathering spots where deer and elk called to their mates. During the revolutionary war, it served as a base for the 23-year armed struggle of the Qiongya Revolution, a stronghold where comrades endured hardship and spread revolutionary ideals—making it a sacred site of the Hainan revolution. Comrade [Deng Xiaoping] once visited Liulian Ridge and composed the poem “Liulian Ridge”: “On Liulian Ridge, colorful clouds arise, red flags are raised for the revolutionary army. Twenty-three years of guerrilla warfare bring celebration as the people of Hainan rise up.”

With its majestic six peaks, layered ridges, and emerald green shade, along with the remarkable legacy of 23 years of unyielding resistance, Liulian Ridge has been included in the *Dictionary of Famous Scenic Spots and Historical Sites in China*.
