Wanning Qingyun Pagoda

Wanning Qingyun Pagoda is a cultural relic protection unit of Hainan Province.

Locally, it is also called "Shanwei Ridge" or "Wanzhou Pagoda." The Qingyun Pagoda has an octagonal structure, built with fired bricks and scattered stones. It stands approximately 27 meters tall and consists of seven stories and seven eaves. At the center of the top floor, there protrudes an octagonal column, atop which rests a spherical finial. The inner wall of the base floor is octagonal, while the inner walls of the upper six floors are all circular. Each floor has two arched doorways facing different directions—one for viewing and the other for ventilation and lighting. On the west side of the base floor, there is a doorway, above which a rectangular stone stele is embedded in the pagoda wall, inscribed with the characters "Qing Yun" (Azure Clouds). Nearby, smaller characters read "Built in the Year of Renchen, Daoguang Reign." The third floor of the pagoda aligns in the same direction as the doorway on the base floor. Another stele of the same size is embedded here, inscribed with the characters "Jia Feng," with smaller characters nearby that are too high to be clearly read. The interior of the pagoda is hollow, allowing ample sunlight and cool breezes.

Visitors can enter through the west doorway on the base floor, look up at the top of the pagoda, and view the full interior, appreciating the remarkable architectural craftsmanship and enchanting scenery of this ancient pagoda. Qingyun Pagoda is one of the rare surviving ancient pagodas in Hainan. It was built in the Year of Renchen during the Daoguang Reign of the Qing Dynasty (1832 AD). According to the *Wanzhou Annals*, the predecessor of Qingyun Pagoda was the Wenkui Pagoda, which was initially constructed in the fifth year of the Kangxi Reign (1666 AD), destroyed, and then rebuilt in the Year of Renchen during the Daoguang Reign. It was renamed Qingyun Pagoda due to its towering and majestic appearance. The Qingyun Pagoda is grand, elegant, sturdy, and reflects the unique brick-and-stone architectural artistry of the ancient people of Wanning. Despite enduring countless typhoons and thunderstorms over the past 150 years, the pagoda remains intact and stands proudly as before.

During Japan’s occupation of Hainan, heavy artillery was used to bombard the pagoda, but it was not destroyed—only the southern corner sustained significant damage. After Hainan became a province, the damaged area was repaired. Qingyun Pagoda is one of Wanning’s famous scenic spots and has been listed as a protected cultural relic under renewed conservation efforts in Hainan. The ancient pagoda exudes a unique charm, surrounded by rugged rocks in various shapes and sizes, lush exotic flowers and plants, and swarms of bees and butterflies flitting among the blossoms and leaves. Below the pagoda flows a stream, resembling a silvery ribbon winding around it, creating a picturesque and enchanting scene.
