Wenchang Tongguling is located in Longlou District, Wenchang County, about 40 kilometers from the county seat, with Tongguling as its center. It stretches over 20 kilometers from the inland in the west to the South China Sea in the east, marking the easternmost tip of Hainan. Known for its stunning mountains and uniquely shaped rocks, as well as captivating legends, it has long been hailed as the “Foremost Peak of Eastern Hainan.” Legend has it that during the Eastern Han Dynasty, General Ma Yuan of the Fubo Commandery led his troops across the sea and landed here to set up camp. When he returned triumphantly to the capital, he left behind a bronze drum, which was later dug up by locals—hence the name of the ridge. The main peak of Tongguling stands at an elevation of 338 meters, surrounded by the sea on three sides, featuring unique landforms and lush vegetation. The scenic area contains historic sites such as temples, monks’ houses, and nunnery dwellings, as well as peculiar rock formations including the Immortal Hall, Immortal Cave, Wind-Moving Stone, Silver Snake Stone, and Turtle Stone. Particularly noteworthy is the “Wind-Moving Stone” at the mountaintop, which is three meters high and weighs approximately 20 tons. It is round on the top and pointed at the bottom, standing upright on two relatively flat base stones. The wind can make it sway slightly without knocking it over. When the sea breeze blows, it makes a whistling sound as it gently rocks. Having endured countless years and even numerous Category 12 typhoons, it remains unmoved—thus earning the name "Wind-Moving Stone." No matter how hard one tries, they cannot push it down, which amazes people. Looking down from atop the Wind-Moving Stone, the most eye-catching sight is the cluster of rocks at the foot of the ridge, resembling hidden dragons and crouching tigers. Legend says there are 3,650 of them. They were originally living sheep, and the Wind-Moving Stone is the “shepherdess” looking down from above.
