The Former Residence of the Soong Family is located in Gulu Garden Village, Changsa Town, Wenchang City, approximately 80 kilometers from Haikou. It sits on a hill surrounded by fruit trees, in a tranquil setting shaded by lush greenery. A shaded path through the village leads to the residence after about 100 meters. This is where Soong Ching-ling, wife of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China, had her great-great-grandfather, great-grandfather, and grandfather all residing here. Her father, Charlie Soong, was born in this ancestral home in 1861. To commemorate Soong Ching-ling and her family’s historical contributions and profound influence, the Wenchang Municipal People's Government restored the Former Residence of the Soong Family in 1985. With the support of the Soong Ching-ling Foundation and friends both in China and abroad, the Soong Ching-ling Memorial Exhibition Hall, Soong Ching-ling Botanical Garden, and a 32-meter-tall white marble statue of Soong Ching-ling were subsequently built to the north of the residence. The renovated ancestral home follows the traditional style of a local farmhouse, consisting of two main rooms, two wing rooms, two gatehouses, and surrounding walls, covering an area of 1,500 square meters with a built-up area of 198 square meters. The exhibition hall is housed within, displaying historical materials, photographs, charts, paintings, and replicated artifacts related to Soong Ching-ling’s youth, revolutionary years, global peace efforts, and the deep remembrance of her by people from all walks of life.
