Wennan Old Street

Wenchang’s Wennan Old Street in Hainan is half the history of overseas Chinese. The street is quite distinctive, with all its buildings constructed by returned overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia, presenting a weathered, rustic charm. As the site of the local town government, it bears the imprints of the past. Unlike the bustling noise of Haikou’s Qilou Old Street, the shops that remain open operate quietly.

The architecture is unique, featuring Qilou-style streets with a blend of Southeast Asian and European styles, plus some Islamic elements, typically around three stories high. The area has been well renovated (though a few unrestored old buildings can still be seen), and now houses a variety of shops. It’s especially picturesque for photography.
