Weiyu Academy

Weiyu Academy is located in Wencheng Town, Wenchang City, Hainan Province, and is one of the well-known academies in Hainan. In the ninth year of the Yongzheng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1731 AD), County Magistrate Liang Ji’an merged the academy with a free school and named it “Zhigong Academy.” In the ninth year of the Jiaqing reign (1804 AD), it was relocated to the site of the former Confucian temple (the current location) and renamed Weiyu Academy. The academy faces east and covers an area of 1,650 square meters. Most of the structure has been altered over time and is divided into three parts: the lecture hall, the rear hall, and the corridor wings. The lecture hall is connected to the rear hall, which features two side corridors. The current lecture hall retains architectural features from the Qing Dynasty, including a flush gable roof and a post-and-lintel timber frame. It is 18 meters wide and 14.4 meters deep. The rear hall also has a flush gable roof and is constructed with brick and wood, measuring three bays wide (12 meters) and 7.8 meters deep. The bracket sets and spandrels of the eaves corridor are adorned with carved wooden ornaments featuring mythical beasts, floral patterns, and other designs, giving the space an elegant and classic charm.
