The Rufu Stone Pagoda in Haikou

The Rufu Stone Pagoda is located in front of Rufu Village, Xiuying District, Haikou City. This renowned Buddhist pagoda was built in the late Song Dynasty and has a history of over 800 years. It is a key cultural relic protection unit in Hainan Province.

Also known as the Nirvana Pagoda, the Rufu Stone Pagoda is entirely constructed from stone, exuding an ancient simplicity and standing majestically. The pagoda stands 2.6 meters tall and is erected on a tall base that is over 10 meters high, 7.6 meters wide, and 7.68 meters long. The pagoda has five levels, built from 23 layers of stone, and is square in shape. The first level contains a niche housing a stone-carved statue, with upturned eaves and a pyramidal base. At the top of the pagoda is a pavilion that houses statues of bodhisattvas and warrior deities, along with a reliquary dome and flame wheel. The back of the pagoda’s base features 25 steps that lead up to the top surface of the platform. The entire base is built from stacked square stones, resembling a diamond-shaped "throne" reminiscent of a Vajra pagoda. The pagoda’s unique design, exquisite craftsmanship, and distinctive style are unparalleled in Hainan and are rarely seen in the history of ancient pagoda architecture across China.
