Chen Yonglie Shrine

The Chen Yonglie Shrine is a cultural relic protection unit of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The Chen Yonglie Shrine is located on Nanmen Street in Longzhou Town, bordered by the Shuikou River to the south, the Longzhou Grain Depot to the north, and residential buildings to the east and west. Also known as the "Zhuizhong Shrine," it is a memorial shrine built specifically to honor the renowned general Chen Jia, who sacrificed his life during the Sino-French War. Chen Jia was brave and skilled in battle, with outstanding military achievements, but died in Longzhou in 1885 due to the recurrence of old wounds. During his lifetime, Chen Jia was awarded the privilege of wearing a yellow mandarin jacket. After his death, the Qing court posthumously honored him with the title "Yonglie" (Brave and Loyal), recorded his biography in the National History Museum, and appointed Su Yuanchun, the Governor-General of Guangxi, to select the site and personally oversee the construction of the shrine, which was completed in the 23rd year of the Guangxu reign (1897). The shrine covers an area of nearly 10,000 square meters, and currently includes the front hall, Lansixiu Garden, Zhaozhong Shrine, and the front courtyard. There is a wide stone staircase leading directly down to the river, and two ancient cannons still remain beside the main gate. The shrine has an imposing presence, featuring flying eaves with dragon motifs and carved decorations at the entrance, exemplifying the classic style of traditional Chinese architecture. It is a well-preserved Qing Dynasty structure with high historical, scientific, and artistic value. In August 1981, it was designated as a key cultural relic protection unit for the entire autonomous region. The Chen Yonglie Shrine has long been open to visitors, receiving around 10,000 tourists annually, and is one of the patriotic education bases in the region.
