Longzhou Uprising Monument

The Longzhou Uprising Monument is a classic site on China's red tourism routes.

On February 1, 1930, Deng Xiaoping, Li Mingrui, Yu Zuoyu, and others led the shocking and world-renowned Longzhou Uprising, establishing the Eighth Army of the Chinese Red Army, forming the Left River Revolutionary Committee, and setting up the Left River Revolutionary Base Area. This connected the Left River and Right River Revolutionary Base Areas into one, creating an important revolutionary base in minority-inhabited regions at that time. The Longzhou Uprising was the only uprising during the Agrarian Revolutionary War period led by the Communist Party of China that upheld the anti-imperialist banner. It greatly inspired the Chinese people’s anti-imperialist spirit, opened a new chapter in the Chinese revolution, and wrote a glorious page in the history of the Chinese revolution.

The Longzhou Uprising Monument is located in the center of General Ridge in the eastern urban area of the county town. The monument was designed based on approximately 80% of the scale and style of the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Beijing. Its structure is solemn, dignified, majestic, and magnificent.

The monument faces south and stands 19.30 meters tall, with a total height of 30.21 meters, symbolizing the date of the Longzhou Uprising on February 1, 1930. The base is 15 meters wide, representing the 15 counties of the Left River region which formed the foundation of the Left River Revolutionary Base Area. The body of the monument is 7 meters wide, and the top is 8 meters wide, symbolizing that the Eighth Army was established after the Seventh Army.

The four sides of the monument’s base feature a total of nine relief groups: ① the victorious uprising, ② Deng Xiaoping leading the establishment of the Party organization, ③ the agrarian revolution, ④ the expulsion of the French consul, ⑤ the campaign against bandits and despots, ⑥ the battle to defend the Iron Bridge, ⑦ the battle to defend Pingxiang, ⑧ the breakout battle at Cai Village, and ⑨ the meeting of the Seventh and Eighth Armies of the Red Army. These depict major historical events before and after the founding of the Eighth Army of the Chinese Red Army. The front of the monument is inscribed with “Longzhou Uprising Monument,” while the back features a quote from Deng Xiaoping: “The fruits of revolutionary victory are forged with the blood of martyrs. The great achievements of the Eighth Red Army and the revolutionary martyrs will live forever in our memory.” The two sides of the monument display the cap badge designs of the Eighth Red Army.

The main entrance to the monument platform consists of about 13 groups totaling 83 steps from the front platform of the monument park down to the base of the slope, connecting to a 30-meter municipal road. There are 6-meter-wide access roads on both sides of the steps for vehicles to enter the park. An ecological parking lot is designed between the municipal road and the main entrance steps. Based on the characteristics of the site, the monument park arranges the monument, pathways, the square, and the parking area along a central axis and its flanks, creating an axial composition that highlights the monument’s grandeur. Meanwhile, the stepped design establishes the appropriate spatial scope for the monument.
