Shentan Grand Canyon

Shentan Grand Canyon is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The scenic area is situated in the southern part of the Zhongtiao Mountains in Yongji City, Shanxi Province. Originally named Shuigu (Water Valley), it has a history of over a thousand years. With majestic mountain ridges, numerous streams and springs, unique natural vegetation, and vast primeval forests of cypresses that thrive lushly—an uncommon sight in the Zhongtiao Mountain region—the entire area is densely wooded and covered with blooming wildflowers. The main peak, "Jiuzhou Gedas" (Nine-Continent Knoll), stands at an elevation of 1,778.3 meters, rising abruptly from the surrounding mountains. Its slopes are steep while the summit is relatively flat. On misty days, the nine peaks appear to float gently above the sea of clouds, creating a surreal and dreamlike scene. Since ancient times, it has been regarded as a symbol of “peace across the nine continents.” Historical research indicates that the area contains ruins such as the Temple of Guan Yu, Temple of the Goddess, Peony Temple, Cypress God Temple, Xianghua Temple, Jade Emperor Temple, Guanyin Temple, Temple of the Medicine God, Dragon King Temple, monasteries, the drilling platform of Luo Cheng from the Tang Dynasty, the martial arts training ground of Huyanzan, the ancient fortress of Meng Jiayuan from the Qing Dynasty, and the summer retreat of Meng Shifang, a Qing-era minister.

The area features natural landscapes highlighted by two waterfalls, three streams, and 108 pools, along with attractions such as the Millennium Divine Turtle, the Bathing Pools of Ehuang and Nüying, the Statue of Guan Yu, Guan Yu’s Sword-Testing Platform, Northern Song Dynasty cliff carvings, the Sky Ladder, and the One-Line Sky. These elements combine with peculiar peaks, unusual rocks, emerald-green pools, and cascading waterfalls to form a mystical, fantastical, and serene natural scenery, earning it the reputation of a “Dreamy Water Town” and a “Heaven on Earth.” It is a natural scenic resort integrating sightseeing, leisure, dining, and entertainment.
