Goutan Miao Village is hidden in a place of breathtaking natural beauty. Due to road construction, the only way to reach this small Miao settlement at present is by waterway. The sole water route is the Bei River, which originates from the Sanfang River in the Jiuwanshan Mountains and is the longest river within Rongshui Miao Autonomous County, Liuzhou City. Nestled against the mountains and facing the water, Goutan Miao Village features layered stairways that climb upward—exuding both a commanding presence and an inviting charm. Because the village is small, transportation is inconvenient, and there is limited interaction with the outside world, the locals have developed a warm and hospitable nature. Both Miao men and women enjoy brewing their own pure, sweet rice wine. Whenever guests arrive, they offer fine drinks, and visitors will have to drink several rounds of the traditional “road-blocking wine.”
