Ancient City of Linhe

The Ancient City of Linhe is situated on Hexi Street in Hejie Town. Hejie Town served as the administrative center of Linhe County, Linhe Commandery, Linqing State, Hezhou, and He County from the Eastern Han Dynasty until August 1951. The ancient city was built during the Eastern Han Dynasty, covering an area of 510 mu. Before the Tang Dynasty, it had an earthen wall, which was surrounded by a moat during the Five Dynasties period. In the Song Dynasty, bricks were used to build the walls, battlements were added, and four gates—east, south, west, and north—were established. Due to its long history, the city once housed numerous structures both inside and outside its walls, including the Confucian Temple, Chidi Temple, Dusi Mansion, Wanshou Palace, Kuixing Tower, Wenbi Pagoda, as well as a number of ancestral halls and temples. Most of these have been lost, but today the Osmanthus Well and Wenbi Pagoda remain preserved.
