On November 19, 1927, Zhu De led the remaining forces of the Nanchang Uprising to Rucheng, where he negotiated cooperation with Fan Shisheng, commander of the 16th Army of the Kuomintang, to establish an anti-Chiang united front. On November 20–21, the two sides held negotiations successively at the Energy Storage School south of the city and in Jinjiang Village, reaching an agreement on cooperation based on three principles proposed by Zhu De: organizational independence, political autonomy, and military freedom.
