Tomb of Norman Bethune

The Tomb of Norman Bethune is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The Tomb of Norman Bethune, located on Zhongshan Road in Shijiazhuang City, North China

Military Region Martyrs' Cemetery on the west side, features a granite base, a semi-circular tomb top, and a white marble gravestone in front inscribed with “Tomb of Dr. Norman Bethune.” The corridors on both sides display photos of Bethune’s revolutionary activities. A full-body statue of Norman Bethune stands in the square in front of the tomb.

Introduction to Norman Bethune: Norman Bethune (Henry Norman Bethune, 1890–1939) was a member of the Communist Party of Canada and a world-renowned thoracic surgeon. During China’s War of Resistance Against Japan, he was dispatched by the governments of Canada and the United States. He arrived in Yan’an between March and April 1938, and soon moved on to work in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Border Region as the medical advisor to the military region. In the winter of 1939, while rescuing the wounded at the frontline in Motianling, Laiyuan, he contracted an infection from a finger injury that led to poisoning. Despite treatment, he passed away on the morning of November 12 of the same year in Huangshikou Village, Tang County. He was buried on November 17 in the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Martyrs’ Cemetery south of Tang County County Town, and was reinterred in the North China Military Region Martyrs' Cemetery in 1953.

Norman Bethune (1890–1939), full name Henry Norman Bethune, was Canadian. He graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1914. With World War I underway, he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in combat across Britain, France, and Belgium. After being wounded, he returned home to continue his studies and earned a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1916. He re-enlisted in 1917, serving in the Canadian Navy and Air Force. After the war ended in 1918, he studied and interned in six Western European countries. In 1923, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
