Population

Tianyan Mountain is located in Sangyuan Kou Village, Jiaotanzhuang Town, Pingshan County, Hebei Province. Sangyuan Kou Village has over 200 households and a population of about 700 people.

Historical Background

The location of Tianyan Mountain Scenic Area, Sangyuan Kou Village, lies at the junction of Hebei and Shanxi provinces in the northwest of Pingshan County. It was a place where Marshal Nie Rongzhen, a revolutionary leader during the Liberation War, lived and fought. During the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War, there were moving stories associated with this area—stories related to its majestic mountains and the simple mountain folk. To this day, remnants of Marshal Nie Rongzhen’s wartime command post still exist within Tianyan Mountain. The local villagers continue to pass down tales of Marshal Nie through generations...

Tianyan Mountain was also where the warlord Yan Xishan once buried military funds and various treasures. A local folk rhyme still circulates among residents: “Nine jars and eighteen pots, not on this slope then on that, front and back of the mountain, left and right, beneath the Ox Head Rock, pot upon pot.” It’s said that many locals have found coins dug up from the area.

Within Tianyan Mountain, there is still a preserved section of the ancient Ming Dynasty Great Wall, which has been designated as a second-tier protected cultural relic by the National Tourism Administration.

Today, Sangyuan Kou Village retains a classic well-preserved ancient village featuring typical Ming and Qing dynasty architectural styles of the Taihang region. Courtyards, stone mills, stone rollers, stone bridges, water mills, as well as thousand-year-old locust trees, pines, and cypresses create a scene like a paradise on earth.

Transportation

Tianyan Mountain Scenic Area is situated along the golden tourist route: Shijiazhuang – Wentang – Xibaipo – Tianyan Mountain – Tiankui Mountain – Tuoliang Mountain – Wutai Mountain, enjoying an exceptionally advantageous geographical location. It is 130 kilometers east of Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province, and approximately 300 kilometers from major cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, Taiyuan, Yangquan, Baoding, Xingtai, Handan, and Cangzhou. By the end of 2009, the first-class highway leading to Xibaipo was about to open (see Appendix II). The main roads within Sangyuan Kou Village, where the scenic area is located, have been paved.

Natural Conditions

Sangyuan Kou Village, where Tianyan Mountain Scenic Area is located, sits at the junction of Hebei and Shanxi provinces in the northwest of Pingshan County. It is home to the only known primeval forest discovered in the Taihang Mountains to date. The area features dense forests, cool climate, numerous streams, and an ancient local culture. At an altitude of 1,200 meters, it houses the only primeval forest discovered so far in the Taihang Mountains, with the main peak reaching 1,728 meters. Here you can find the majestic Five Dragons Pool Waterfall, lush vegetation, evergreen pines and cypresses, deep valleys, abundant streams, a cool climate, and negative ion levels 200–400 times higher than typical work environments.

Geology and Landforms

Tianyan Mountain Scenic Area is located at the junction of Hebei and Shanxi provinces in the northwest of Pingshan County. The terrain is rugged, steep, and precipitous, with deep valleys and highly eroded landscapes. There is very little arable land in the region, and rivers have developed with intense erosion and cutting, often forming steep cliffs and gorges. The area enjoys high vegetation coverage and relatively abundant forestry resources. It is also rich in minerals, mainly iron ore, quartz ore, and mica ore.
