The Ancient City of Zhengding

The Ancient City of Zhengding is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The Ancient City of Zhengding is located on the Central Hebei Plain. Historically known as Changshan or Zhending, it was once one of the “Three Northern Strongholds” alongside Beijing and Baoding, serving as the northern gateway to Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province.

The Ancient City of Zhengding boasts a long history, numerous scenic spots and historical sites, and a deep cultural foundation, earning it the reputation of a “treasure trove of ancient architecture.”

Zhengding is a historic city well known for its tourism and culture. Historical records indicate that humans have lived and thrived here for 5,000 years. During the Spring and Autumn Period, it was part of the state of Xianyu, and during the Warring States Period, it belonged to the state of Zhongshan. After the state of Zhao conquered Zhongshan, the area came under Zhao’s control. During the Qin Dynasty, it was part of Hengshan Commandery, and in the early Han Dynasty, Dongyuan County was established. In the tenth year of Emperor Gaozu of Han (197 AD), when Chen Xi rebelled against the court, the rebel general Zhao Li defended Dongyuan. The following year, Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang led his troops to capture Dongyuan. To signify everlasting peace across the land, he renamed Dongyuan County to Zhending. For over 1,400 years since then, it has continuously served as the seat of prefectures, states, commanderies, and counties, acting as the political, economic, military, and cultural center of the north. It was once known as one of the “Three Northern Strongholds” together with Baoding and Beijing. To this day, the south gate of Zhengding still bears a stone plaque inscribed with the words “Stronghold of the Three Passes.” In the first year of the Yongzheng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1723 AD), the name was changed from Zhending to Zhengding to avoid the naming taboo of Emperor Yongzheng (Yongzheng’s personal name was Yinzhen), and it has retained that name ever since.
