Pingshan Ziyun Mountain Scenic Area

The Pingshan Ziyun Mountain Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Ziyun Mountain Scenic Area is located in Nanyeh Donggou Village, Beiyeh Township, Pingshan County, 50 kilometers from Pingshan County, 45 kilometers from Xibaipo, and 90 kilometers from Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital. It neighbors Tiankui Mountain and ??? Water Scenic Area.

The scenic area features towering peaks that are majestic, steep, and uniquely beautiful, with cliffs like screens and clustered rocks. The main peak stands at an elevation of 1128 meters. There are over 30 rock formations such as Tiger Roaring Peak, Crouching Tiger Stone, Immortal Bathing Peak, General Peak, Natural Bridge, One-Finger Mountain, and Human-Bird Dialogue. Both the southern and northern mountains are hollow, housing more than 20 natural caves, with entrances either at the valley bottom or hanging on cliff faces. Currently, three caves have been developed for tourism: Huan Gong Cave, Ziyun Cave, and Soul-Lost Cave, ranging in length from 60 to 1000 meters. Inside these caves, one cave leads to another, twisting and turning endlessly, with spacious areas that can accommodate hundreds of people and narrow passages where only one person can pass sideways. The various stalactites feature peculiar shapes, countless forms, lifelike appearances, and vivid representations, resembling an underground palace. They offer visitors a surreal feeling of being between heaven and earth.

The vegetation in the scenic area is quite lush, with peach, apricot, persimmon, jujube, pine, cypress, Chinese toon, vines, wildflowers, and chrysanthemums spread across the mountains. The primeval secondary forests and rustling pines stir the imagination. The vast red leaves across the mountains in late autumn are fiery and splendid, considered a unique wonder of the Taihang Mountains. The air here is fresh, resembling a natural oxygen bar.

The original stone courtyards and houses of Donggou Village, scattered and nestled among the trees according to the terrain, have been renovated to be both rustic and elegantly quiet and comfortable, offering a refreshing experience. The scenic area also contains the ruins of a rear hospital and shoe factory of the Eighth Route Army from the Anti-Japanese War period, which have now become a patriotic education base.

Since ancient times, Ziyun Mountain has been regarded as a geomantic treasure land. As early as the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the leader of the Xianyu tribe, Huan—later the King Huan of the Zhongshan State—led the Xianyu people to choose this land. After more than 20 years of dedicated development, they marched east out of the Taihang Mountains in 381 BC and accomplished the mission of restoring their kingdom. During the Anti-Japanese War, the rear hospital and shoe factory of the Eighth Route Army were also built here, making outstanding contributions to the liberation of the Chinese nation.

The Ziyun Mountain Scenic Area is open from April to November each year, with different features in different seasons. April is the best time for hiking and mountain climbing, with an annual Mountaineering Festival held then. In May, Chinese toon matures, allowing for hiking, sightseeing, and toon picking. From June 10 to August 10 is the mulberry-picking festival. From July to October is the vegetable-picking festival. From October 15 to November 10 is the Red Leaf Festival, the most beautiful season of the year in Ziyun Mountain.

Transportation by bus: Take a bus from Shijiazhuang North Passenger Transport Station to Pingshan County, then transfer to a minibus to Beiyeh, and from there take a taxi or hire a car to reach the scenic area.

Self-driving route: Shijiazhuang – Pingshan Wentang – Guyue (turn left) – Nanyeh (turn left) directly to the scenic area; Taiyuan – Yangqu – Yuxian – Jiaokou – Qingfeng – Tayai (turn right) – Nanyeh (turn right) directly to the scenic area.

Beiyeh Township: Beiyeh Township is located in the deep mountainous area of the southwestern part of Pingshan County. It borders Zhongguyue Town to the east, and Xiajue Town and Xiakou Town to the west and north respectively, and adjoins Shanxi Province to the south. The township's altitude ranges from 320 to 1400 meters and consists of mountains, hills, terraces, and flatlands, with forest coverage exceeding 70%. Most cultivated land is concentrated on terraces and flatlands. The Xianyi River runs through the entire township, and the Guyue-Lantouqi Road and National Highway 207 cross the area.
