Jingtang Duanjia Building Scenic Area

Jingtang Duanjia Building Scenic Area is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

Duanjia Building is located in Maxigou, Fengshan Town, southern Jingtang Mining District, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province. It was built with massive investment by Duan Qirui, the foremost of China’s top ten warlords, who also served as the Premier and Minister of War of the Beiyang Government. It is the largest and best-preserved German-style architectural complex in the Shijiazhuang area to date, and is now a key cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The Duanjia Building Scenic Area is composed of four parts: Duanjia Building, Duanjia’s private garden, Duanjia’s underground tunnels, and the remaining underground mine passages from Zhengfeng Mine, covering a total area of 160,000 square meters. The scenic area currently retains about 9,000 square meters of built-up area, mainly including the Premier's Office Building, the Young Lady’s Building, the Young Master’s Building, the Side Building, residences for senior staff, and the Coal Institute. These buildings feature scientifically sound designs, exquisite craftsmanship, and ingenious structures, making them rare architectural art treasures in North China where Western architectural styles blend perfectly with classical Chinese elements. Furthermore, surrounded by ancient cypresses, flower stands, green lawns, walkways, and corridors, they form an exceptionally beautiful garden landscape.

The Duanjia Building tunnels stretch 5,556 meters, approximately 11 li, with 13 exits. The tunnels house a command room, a confidential office, and more, spanning three levels—upper, middle, and lower—and are interconnected in all directions. They come fully equipped with both offensive and defensive facilities, earning recognition from industry insiders as the “Underground Great Wall.”

During the Liberation War, Commander-in-Chief Zhu De once stayed at Duanjia Building. Items such as desks, chairs, sofas, filing cabinets, and telephones used by Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou, and other central leaders at the revolutionary holy site Xibaipo Memorial Hall were also transported from Duanjia Building at that time.
