Hebei Art Center

The Hebei Provincial Art Center is located at No. 13 Yuhua West Road, Shijiazhuang City, the capital of Hebei Province. It was a key construction project during the Ninth Five-Year Plan period designated by the Hebei Provincial Party Committee and Government, and was listed as one of the projects to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1999. The Hebei Provincial Art Center is large in scale and fully equipped, and is the largest cultural facility built in Hebei Province since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Since its completion, the provincial art center has hosted numerous large-scale stage performances, concerts from countries including the United States, Russia, and France, as well as major cultural events and celebrations in the provincial capital. It serves as the main venue for the China Wuqiao International Circus Festival and is one of the best-equipped performing arts venues in China.

The Hebei Provincial Art Center consists of four parts: a multi-functional acrobatics hall, a concert hall, a cinema, and an underground parking lot. It integrates seven functions: acrobatics, drama, song and dance, symphony, large-scale artistic performances, minor sports competitions, and fashion shows. The entire project covers an area of 44.62 mu, with a total construction area of 32,059 square meters and a total investment of 320 million RMB. Construction began on September 28, 1997, and it was put into use in October 1999.

The multi-functional acrobatics hall is the main building of the Hebei Provincial Art Center, primarily built to host the biennial China Wuqiao International Circus Festival. The hall has 2,800 soft seats, along with a 400-square-meter rehearsal room, more than 20 dressing rooms and rest areas, animal enclosures, and other supporting facilities. It mainly hosts large-scale acrobatic (circus) performances, and is also capable of accommodating large-scale symphonies, song and dance, opera, folk art, fashion shows, and minor sports competitions. The imported stage machinery integrates a mother-daughter lift, rotating lift, air cushion stage, and wagon stage, and is equipped with a lift orchestra pit. The stage offers various transformable configurations such as open stage, proscenium stage, thrust stage, etc., to meet different artistic presentation needs. The performance area spans nearly 1,000 square meters, providing a brand-new space for the development of diverse, multi-faceted, and multi-level performances. With a proscenium opening of 16.8m x 32m, it is among the widest in China, and features the world’s largest cinema screen to enhance the center’s brand appeal. The multi-functional acrobatics hall accommodates the needs of large-scale stage performances such as song and dance, drama, and ballet, making it a versatile performance venue.

The concert hall is primarily designed for symphony and chamber music performances, but also serves other functions, including movie screenings. The hall can accommodate 980 listeners (535 in the stalls and 445 in the balcony), with an effective volume of 8,500 cubic meters, a seat-to-volume ratio of 8.7 cubic meters, and a total area of 3,368 cubic meters. The concert hall features a hexagonal layout, with most audience seats situated within an inverted fan-shaped area to ensure even distribution of early reflected sound. The performance stage is located at the top of the hall, covering an area of 230 square meters, and can accommodate large choirs and four-pipe orchestras. The last row of balcony seats is just 29 meters from the center of the stage and 23 meters from the proscenium, with a platform width of 26 meters and a height of 14 meters. The stage is equipped with spherical diffusers and directional reflectors to improve sound clarity for musicians and enhance volume in the rear seats. To meet varying reverberation time requirements for different types of music and functions, the concert hall is fitted with a distributed computer-controlled reverberation time adjustment system, adjustable by 0.5 seconds, using a combination of rotary cylindrical structures and pleated curtains.
