Pingshan Gangnan Reservoir

Pingshan Gangnan Reservoir is one of the key projects in the harnessing of the Hutuo River. It is a large-scale water conservancy hub that serves multiple purposes including flood control, irrigation, power generation, urban water supply, and fish farming in the reservoir area. Construction began in 1958. It is located in Xigangnan Village, Pingshan County, Hebei Province. The reservoir lies in the middle reaches of the Hutuo River and controls a drainage area of 15,900 square kilometers, accounting for about 68% of the mountainous area of the river. The reservoir area is situated on the southeastern wing of the Taihang Mountain anticline. The average annual precipitation is 485 millimeters, mostly concentrated in summer with frequent heavy rains, making it one of the sources of flooding in the Hutuo River.

The total storage capacity of Gangnan Reservoir is 1.57 billion cubic meters, of which over 900 million cubic meters are allocated for flood control. When operated in coordination with the downstream Huangbizhuang Reservoir, it can reduce the peak flow of a once-in-a-thousand-years flood by 70%, ensuring the safety of Shijiazhuang City and the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway. The average annual runoff is 1.41 billion cubic meters, with an annual sediment transport of about 10 million tons.
