Nangunlonggou Nature Scenic Area
The Nangunlonggou Scenic Area is located in Zhai Bei Township, Pingshan, situated along the golden tourist route from Xibaipo to Mount Wutai. It is a travel destination that blends natural ecological landscapes with red cultural history. Legend has it that Emperor Liu Xiu of the Eastern Han Dynasty was chased here by Wang Mang, fell from his horse, and rolled into the gully, hence the village's name. The scenic area consists of seven major gullies and 37 smaller ones, covering an area of 24,000 mu.
The area features rolling green mountains and towering ancient trees; dense forests like seas, abundant grasses, and lush vegetation. There are 15 unique peaks, including Elephant Peak, Four Maidens Peak, and Bodhisattva Peak. Seven springs, such as Stone Seam Spring and Rest Horse Spring, flow along the gullies, forming waterfalls where they meet cliffs, creating spectacular icefalls in winter and spring. The area is densely forested with pine, cypress, chestnut, and lotus persimmon trees, and is home to over 700 species of wild flowers and plants. Shrubs mainly include wisteria, mountain bamboo, and kudzu. The vegetation coverage of the scenic area reaches 95%.
During the revolutionary war period, this place once housed the rear organs of the Party Central Committee, as well as the Jin-Cha-Ji Daily and Xinhua Radio Station. Marshal Nie Rongzhen published a series of important articles, including "Swear to Drive the Japanese Invaders Out of the Border Region." The newspaper staff, together with local soldiers and civilians and the Fifth Regiment of the Eighth Route Army, achieved great feats such as the "Great Victory at Bailongdang, Ambush at Jiaoding, Seven Entries and Exits at Huazi Jian, and Publishing Newspapers with Eight Mules."
During the socialist construction period, the people of Nangunlonggou relied on their own efforts, worked hard, cut through mountains, and transformed rivers and land, becoming a national model for learning from Dazhai. The people of Nangunlonggou were received multiple times by Chairman Mao and the Party Central Committee. Premier Zhou Enlai personally inscribed and awarded certificates to Nangunlonggou. Premier Zhou visited twice to provide guidance. At that time, party, government, military agencies, organizations, and friends from over 40 countries came to visit and learn. Nangunlonggou became another iconic Dazhai-style banner that resounded across China.
In summer, Nangunlonggou is cool and lush with red and green hues; in winter, hot springs gush out and the landscape is covered in silvery white. Against the backdrop of its beautiful natural scenery, revolutionary relics within the scenic area such as the ruins of the Jin-Cha-Ji Daily, Deng Tuo’s former residence, and the tomb of Wang Erxiao become even more captivating. Stone terraces wind up the mountainsides, mountain canals resemble white ribbons piercing through clouds and mist, and dams in the valleys block mountain springs—perfect for swimming, fishing, and boating.
With its elegant environment, unique peaks, misty rain, clear mountain valley springs, and waterfall curtains between peaks, it is a large-scale tourist destination ideal for leisure vacations and patriotic education.
