Baicaoping Reservoir

Also known as Cuiping Lake or Suoyun Lake, Baicaoping Reservoir is located in the southwestern mountainous area of Zanhuang County, upstream of the tributaries of the Huai River. It was constructed in 1958 and completed for use in 1973. The reservoir is 15 kilometers from downtown Zanhuang, 70 kilometers from Shijiazhuang, 65 kilometers west of Shanxi’s Dazhai Forest Park, 10 kilometers from Qipanshan Scenic Area, 25 kilometers south of Lincheng’s Kongshan Baiyun Cave, 40 kilometers north of Jingxing’s Cangyan Mountain, and 30 kilometers southwest of Zhangshiyan National Scenic Area.

The reservoir controls a catchment area of 230 square kilometers. Construction began in November 1970, with the main dam reaching a temporary flood control elevation of 295 meters in July 1972, and the main project substantially completed in June 1973. The total storage capacity is 46.5 million cubic meters, the useful storage capacity is 23.8 million cubic meters, and the dead storage capacity is 1.2 million cubic meters.

The main dam is an earth-rock composite dam with a crest elevation of 298 meters. The maximum dam height is 42 meters, and the dam crest is 550 meters long. The auxiliary dam is on the left bank, with a crest elevation of 299.2 meters, a length of 140 meters, and a maximum dam height of 4 meters. The water inlet tunnel is located on the right bank of the main dam, circular and pressurized, with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a length of 220 meters. The inlet bottom elevation is 265.14 meters, and the maximum discharge capacity is 70 cubic meters per second. The normal spillway is between the main and auxiliary dams, featuring a camelback-type overflow weir. The weir crest elevation is 288 meters, with a width of 70 meters. No gates are installed, and the maximum discharge capacity is 3,985 cubic meters per second. The emergency spillway is also on the left bank, consisting of an open broad-crested weir. The weir crest elevation is 294 meters, with a net width of 200 meters, and a maximum discharge capacity of 1,905 cubic meters per second.
