Memorial Hall of Victory in the Bandit Suppression Campaign

The Memorial Hall of Victory in the Bandit Suppression Campaign is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The year was 1952. Located in Chenyang Town, Chenxi County, Hunan Province, this is a memorial structure built by the people of western Hunan to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives honorably in the bandit suppression battles.

In 1952, the Xiangxi Administrative Office decided to build the Yuanling District Bandit Suppression Memorial Hall in Chenxi County and assigned the task of constructing it to the Chenxi County Government. It was completed and inaugurated on July 1, 1953. The memorial hall features a brick-and-wood structure with a green-tiled roof and exposed brick walls. Its main facade faces south, while the stage extends eastward, forming a T-shaped building. The roof trusses employ a British Howe truss design. It has a single-eave roof and consists of a main hall, stage, and cantilevered wing rooms. This grand, rectangular building showcases architectural styles unique to western Hunan. The plaque above the entrance reads “Memorial Hall of Victory in the Bandit Suppression Campaign of the Yuanling District.”

At the top of the memorial archway are sculptures of two doves, while commemorative inscriptions and lists of martyrs are engraved on the side walls. The area around the memorial hall is covered with lush pines and cypresses, adding to its solemn and respectful atmosphere. The sides of the hall are enclosed by walls and railings, with stone steps leading up to the front, flanked by trees and flower beds.

On May 19, 2002, the People’s Government of Hunan Province designated it as a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit, with the reference number 28-28.
