Songxikou Site

The Songxikou Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Hunan Province.

The Songxikou Shell Mound Site is situated in Daqiao Village, Huomachong Town, Chenxi County, along the middle reaches of the Yuan River, about 20 kilometers northwest of Chenxi County. Discovered in 1984 during a cultural relics survey, it is considered a relic of the legendary "Chenzhou Culture." The early phase dates back 7,800 years and the late phase 6,600 years, with findings that include China’s earliest known depictions of dragons and phoenixes, as well as pictographic characters. These discoveries push the timeline of Chinese civilization back 3,000 years from the traditionally recognized 5,000 years, providing tangible evidence for the long-rumored "Chenzhou Culture" that dates back tens of thousands of years. This represents a milestone discovery by the Hunan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology.

In March 2019, the Songxikou Site was included in the tenth list of Provincial-Level Cultural Heritage Protection Units in Hunan Province.
