The Zuolong Gorge Scenic Area is located in Hexi Town, Guzhang County, just across the river from “Furong Town”—Wangcun. It is 5 kilometers from Mengdonghe Railway Station and can be directly accessed via Provincial Highway 1828.

Zuolong Gorge was formed over 3 million years through natural wind and water erosion and has remained hidden deep within the vast mountain ranges of western Hunan. It stretches about 3,500 meters in length, with a maximum elevation difference of over 300 meters; at its widest points it spans barely more than a few meters, while at its narrowest, only one person can pass through. The valley features towering cliffs layered upon one another, hanging streams and waterfalls, slanting trees on the cliffsides, and a variety of rare plants covering the landscape.

Zuolong Gorge boasts China’s first specialized adventure trail. All paths are built deep within the canyon, following the contours of the mountains and blending seamlessly with nature, yet crafted with meticulous care. The rustic chestnut wood boardwalks allow you to get up close to the emerald pools and hear the tinkling mountain springs; the ingeniously designed stepping stones let you play with the flowing streams and feel the splash of the waterfalls; the natural stone steps require you to summon all your strength and focus to climb, offering a true immersion into the canyon; and the thrilling iron staircases let you experience a rush of adrenaline as you listen to the roaring waters below, finding excitement in the midst of awe.

At the exit, the Tujia ethnic mountain village preserves ancient and unique local customs. A slice of cured meat paired with a sip of mellow “Báigǔ Shāo” liquor will wash away all your fatigue, and the hospitable locals will gladly share tales of the bandits who once roamed these lands, all while you relax and unwind...
